Digital piracy is something so many of us do without giving it a second thought. Whether it's using our friend's Microsoft Office disc to install the software on our personal computer, purchasing "bootlegged" DVDs, or downloading our favorite song through peer-to-peer networking. The war on internet pirates
The war on internet piracy is an ongoing battle with no end in sight. Between BitTorrent downloads, online cloud computing torrent sites and the traditional torrent websites, piracy is more prevalent now more than ever. Although there have been many attempts at shutting these sites down, more pop up each day.
This article by the New York Times details the efforts of the copyright owner's trying to take down their material from these sites and the hurdles that they must overcome to get what they want.
Do you think there will ever be an end to online piracy?

Piracy will go away when all crime goes away. But offering the same content at reasonable prices obviously helps reduce the demand for pirated material. Why would you pay the $2500 retail price for Adobe CS6 when you can get it and use it for free? If there are little to no consequences, people are going to find a way to do it.
ReplyDeleteThat's a great point. Although, there are significant consequences if you are caught illegally downloading material. Apparently most people are willing to take that risk though.
ReplyDeleteI don't think there ever will be an end. Online piracy is kind of like stealing. Stealing will never go away and I don't think Digital piracy will either.
ReplyDeleteIf there are ways to get items for free or for really cheap, then people will find a way to get them no matter how unethical it is or illegal.
Reema, I completely agree with you but the people participating in this illegal activity have to consider the consequences if they are caught as well. It ultimately comes down to if the risk is worth the reward, and for many people the answer is yes.
